“Waste Collector Warns Against Improper Carpet Disposal”

A waste collector has issued a caution that individuals attempting to discard an item commonly found in nearly every UK household in the trash on collection day risk having their bin left at the curb, still full, until the next pickup. This advice was shared on social media recently.

According to Ashley, known as @Theno1.binman on TikTok, there are various methods to get rid of an old carpet or rug. He emphasized that carpets should not be disposed of in household bins due to their size and bulkiness.

Carpets are deemed unsuitable for standard household bins because they are large, heavy, non-biodegradable, and pose challenges for processing at landfills and recycling facilities. They are categorized as specialized waste, and placing them in regular bins can lead to non-collection or fines.

The majority of carpets are made from synthetic fibers like nylon or polypropylene, which do not degrade in landfills and can take hundreds of years to decompose, as reported by the Express.

Similar regulations apply to rugs for the same reasons. Although smaller rugs might be accepted in some areas as general waste if cut into pieces, many councils explicitly prohibit them from standard black bins.

Individuals seeking to dispose of unwanted carpets have several options available that won’t upset local waste collectors. One option is to contact the local authority to arrange a bulky waste collection, which may involve a fee depending on the location.

For those getting new flooring installed, it’s advisable to inquire whether the installation company offers removal services for the old carpet, although this service often comes at an extra cost.

There are free alternatives for getting rid of old carpets, such as taking them to a local recycling center and locating the bulky goods section. It’s recommended to check with the council beforehand to ensure compliance with the correct disposal procedures.

If the carpet is in good condition, selling it online through platforms like Facebook groups or Marketplace is an option. Additionally, local animal rescue centers often welcome donations of old carpets for insulation purposes to help keep animals warm.

In addition to carpets, there are several other items that are not permitted in household recycling collections, like crisp packets. While these items claim to be recyclable, they should be taken to supermarkets for recycling rather than being placed in general waste bins.

Ashley emphasized in a previous video that crisp packets and similar items can be recycled at supermarkets, urging individuals to utilize this option for proper disposal.
