In a significant update to recycling practices in England, households are now no longer required to include common food waste items in their collections. The enforcement of mandatory and consistent recycling for businesses and residences under the UK’s Simpler Recycling reforms, part of the Environment Act 2021, has led to changes in the types of materials collected.
Under the new regulations, separate collections are now in place for various recyclable materials such as food waste, paper, card, glass, metal, and plastic. Local authorities are mandated to provide clear guidelines on what can and cannot be recycled, with some councils granted exemptions until at least 2040.
Certain common food items, including pet food pouches and coffee pouches, are no longer accepted for recycling by local authorities. Instead, individuals are advised to dispose of these items in general household waste bins. However, baby food, pet food, and detergent pouches can be recycled at selected retailers.
Items like coffee pods labeled as “compostable” or “biodegradable” do not need to be included in recycling collections. Specialized recycling services like Podback offer drop-off points at various locations for these items. Additionally, food and drink cartons containing over 5% plastic should be recycled with plastic waste rather than paper and cardboard due to their composition.
Tea bags and ground coffee are also not required to be collected for recycling by local authorities. Residents can choose to dispose of these in their food waste bin or compost heap at home. It is crucial for individuals to familiarize themselves with these new recycling rules to ensure compliance and effective waste management practices.
