A 20-year-old individual with intentions related to terrorism has been sentenced for possessing a video demonstrating how to create an explosive commonly used in attacks in the UK. Adam Mahmood, who had a significant following on TikTok, requested the instructional video from another user via a messaging app. Authorities discovered “medieval weapons” in Mahmood’s bedroom during the investigation.
Following a week-long trial in September, Mahmood was found guilty of possessing a recording that could aid in terrorism activities. He has been sentenced to four years in a young offender institution, with an additional three years on license after his custodial term expires for public protection.
The video Mahmood possessed provided detailed instructions on making an explosive device, including a detonator and shrapnel. The court also noted the presence of medieval weapons in Mahmood’s possession, which he claimed were related to his interest in Islamic history.
Despite no explicit evidence of Mahmood planning a specific terrorist act with the video, the judge highlighted the discovery of ball bearings in his room as suggestive of potential assembly intentions. The judge emphasized the concerning nature of an arsenal in the possession of an 18-year-old, indicating a lack of intervention from responsible adults.
Judge Drew mentioned Mahmood’s deliberate actions in saving the bomb-making video, suggesting a clear understanding of its content. Mahmood was deemed to pose a significant risk of reoffending due to his support for banned terrorist groups.
