Iran Rejects Trump’s Economic Threats as “Diversion”

Iran’s foreign minister dismissed recent threats made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced intentions to initiate what he called the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN” against Iran. Abbas Araghchi, in a social media post, stated that Trump’s plan was a diversion from America’s own financial difficulties, emphasizing that continuing failed policies would only lead to more losses and hostility from Iranians. Araghchi highlighted that the U.S.’ economic actions were a form of terrorism that posed a threat to the global economy and sovereignty worldwide.

Trump’s declaration of imposing “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale” against Iran came shortly before Araghchi’s response. The U.S. president’s message on Truth Social warned nations of severe economic repercussions if they provided any support to Iran, urging allies to stand together to combat the perceived threat.

China, a significant importer of Iran’s oil, could be impacted by the escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized the importance of a diplomatic approach rather than sanctions and pressure tactics as solutions to international conflicts.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that focusing on economic measures could reduce the necessity for large-scale military actions against Tehran. Following the U.S.’ threats, oil prices surged to their highest level in over three weeks, reflecting market concerns over the potential repercussions of the ongoing conflict.

Dan Shapiro, a former U.S. ambassador, cautioned that Trump’s approach failed to acknowledge Iran’s capacity to withstand economic pressure and retaliate. Shapiro noted that the current situation was a result of escalating tensions without a clear path forward.

Iran has been under severe economic sanctions for years, with the conflict resulting in numerous casualties. Despite failed negotiations and the expiration of a 60-day peace negotiation period, there was no indication of progress towards a lasting resolution. Trump hinted at the possibility of future talks, leaving the situation uncertain.
