Renowned martial arts icon Bruce Leung has passed away at the age of 77. The revered star, known by aliases Leung Choi-sang and Leung Siu-lung, succumbed to heart failure on January 14 with his family by his side, as per reports.
Leung, recognized as one of the Four Dragons of Chinese cinema alongside Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Ti Lung, made a significant impact on Chinese-language martial arts cinema.
In a heartfelt tribute, Jackie Chan, who collaborated with Leung on the movie “Magnificent Bodyguards” and various other projects, expressed his shock and sorrow on social media. He reminisced about Leung’s exceptional skills as a kung fu master proficient in diverse traditional martial arts styles, which he seamlessly integrated into his work in film and television.
Transitioning from acting to entrepreneurship after gaining fame in the 1970s and 80s, Leung later returned to the big screen with a memorable performance as the villain Beast in Stephen Chow’s blockbuster “Kung Fu Hustle” in 2004.
Having learned martial arts from his father at a young age, Leung starred in numerous kung fu films throughout his illustrious career. He gained widespread recognition across Asia for his portrayal of the patriotic hero Chen Zhen in the TV series “The Legendary Fok” and its sequel “Fist of Fury.”
Funeral arrangements for Leung are being handled privately by his family, with a scheduled service set for January 26 in Longgang, China.
The news of Leung’s unexpected demise shocked fans, especially as a photo of him happily socializing at a recent gathering surfaced just a day before his passing. The image captured a joyful moment as Leung flashed a thumbs-up, enjoying a hotpot meal with friends, exuding positivity as he shared his personally signed ‘True Kung Fu’ calligraphy.
