“Reality Check: International Women’s Day Amidst Global Challenges”

On International Women’s Day, while many are celebrating, I choose not to partake in the festivities. Today, social media platforms will be abuzz with empowering messages about women’s strength, sisterhood, and equality. Despite the inspirational content, the reality of our current global situation, with a leader facing allegations of sexual misconduct leading us towards a potential global conflict, overshadows any sense of celebration.

The commercialization of this event by companies boasting about their female workforce or offering discounts on beauty products feels superficial. Beneath the surface, women continue to grapple with significant financial disparities, inadequate medical care, and constant threats to their safety from male perpetrators. The gender pay gap in the UK, which effectively had women working for free for over a month at the beginning of 2026, highlights the stark inequality that persists.

This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” aims to emphasize collaboration for gender equality. While the concept is noble, it falls short in addressing the harsh realities faced by women daily. The experiences shared by women at the Mirror shed light on the disconnect between the idealized portrayal of International Women’s Day and the harsh truths women encounter.

The tragic case of Sarah Everard, brutally murdered by a police officer, sparked outrage and highlighted the pervasive issue of violence against women and girls. Despite promises of reform and increased awareness, women still struggle to access essential support services due to funding cuts and systemic failures. The inadequacies in maternity care further underscore the challenges faced by women in healthcare, with reports of negligence, discrimination, and tragic outcomes.

The gender pay gap remains a pressing issue, hindering women’s financial stability and opportunities for advancement. The societal pressure on women to prioritize family over career clashes with the economic realities many face, especially in an increasingly competitive job market and rising living costs. The struggles of women in various aspects of life demand more than symbolic gestures on International Women’s Day; they require tangible actions to address systemic inequalities.

As we reflect on the progress made and the challenges that persist, it is evident that the road to gender equality is far from smooth. The stories shared by women underscore the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and support mechanisms to ensure a more equitable and safe environment for all women. International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for gender parity and the collective effort needed to bring about meaningful change.
