The grieving parents of a young expert who passed away at the age of 19 are advocating for ADHD screening in schools to prevent future tragedies.
Matthew Lock, a talented teenager and advocate for the Labour Party, sadly died in 2023 due to issues related to alcohol and ketamine addiction associated with his undiagnosed ADHD. His parents, Richard and Christine, are urging schools and healthcare providers to enhance screening efforts for ADHD to help the many children affected by this condition.
Christine emphasized the importance of early detection, stating that understanding and support could have made a significant difference for Matthew. The Locks, from Sefton, Merseyside, established the Matthew Lock ADHD Charity to address the long wait times families endure for diagnosis and to raise awareness about the impact of ADHD.
They believe that implementing digital screening in schools and providing better training for medical professionals could be transformative, potentially benefiting hundreds of thousands of children in need of support. Richard highlighted the lack of support and guidance available to parents, stressing the urgent need for improved screening processes to prevent individuals from spiraling into crisis situations.
Describing Matthew as a vibrant member of the community with a passion for vacuum cleaners, Christine fondly remembered her son and his positive impact on others. Despite his promising future, Matthew tragically succumbed to impulsive actions influenced by ketamine.
MPs, including Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson, are backing the Locks’ efforts to improve ADHD screening and support services. Esterson praised the family’s advocacy work, acknowledging the critical need for early diagnosis and swift intervention to prevent tragedies like Matthew’s. The push for faster ADHD assessments and accessible screening tools in schools aims to provide timely support and prevent prolonged struggles for individuals with ADHD.
The Lock family’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and proactive measures to support individuals dealing with ADHD and related challenges.
