Heartbroken family and friends are mourning the loss of a compassionate and affectionate couple who tragically perished in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle.
Christine and Stephen Routledge, residents of Berwick, met a tragic fate alongside their pet dog when the vehicle they were in collided with the truck on the A1 near Buckton on January 14.
Following the incident around 7.40 am, emergency services promptly responded to the scene. Regrettably, Mr. Routledge, 64, succumbed to his injuries on-site. Mrs. Routledge, 66, was transported to the hospital for medical attention but unfortunately passed away later. Their cherished dog Bear, accompanying them in the Skoda during the crash, also suffered injuries and did not survive.
A man in his 30s was apprehended on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, as reported by Chronicle Live. He has been released pending further investigation.
In a tribute to Christine and Stephen, their family described them as “loving” and “remarkable grandparents”. In a statement, their loved ones expressed, “Our parents were loving, generous, and deeply devoted to our family.”
“They were the pillars of our lives, always providing support, guidance, and unwavering love. They were extraordinary grandparents to our 10 children who will deeply miss them,” the statement continued.
“Their sudden departure in a car accident, alongside their beloved dog Bear whom they adored, has left an indescribable void. They lived lives of kindness and integrity, impacting many with their warmth and selflessness.”
“Though we are devastated by this loss, we are thankful for the memories, values, and love they bestowed upon us, guiding us every day. Finding solace in the fact that they are together now.”
“We are grateful for the overwhelming support, prayers, and empathy during this incredibly challenging time. We kindly ask for privacy as we mourn and honor their lives.”
Subsequent to the collision, both the HGV driver and the Audi driver were hospitalized for treatment of their injuries. They have both been discharged since then.
Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is conducting an inquiry into the incident. Sergeant Dave Roberts, from the force, conveyed, “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Mr. and Mrs. Routledge during this tragic time. We are committed to extending any assistance possible to them.”
