Trump Backtracks on Tariffs Amid Greenland Dispute

Donald Trump has reversed his decision to impose tariffs on the UK and other allies in the dispute over Greenland. The US President, known for his unpredictability, announced on Truth Social that he had a change of heart after facing widespread international criticism. This turnaround came shortly after Keir Starmer declared his opposition to the tariff threat.

Trump hinted at a resolution being achieved after talks with NATO chief Mark Rutte. The move to implement tariffs on February 1 in response to resistance against his Greenland acquisition plans had sparked global outrage.

In a press interaction, Trump was asked if the deal involved US ownership of Greenland, to which he cryptically responded, “It’s a long term deal. It’s the ultimate long term deal.” When pressed on the duration of the agreement, he stated, “Infinite. There is no time limit. It’s a deal that’s forever.”

The President later discussed the potential deal’s benefits for the US and European leaders, emphasizing cooperation on Arctic matters and security, particularly concerning Greenland.

On Truth Social, Trump detailed the progress made with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte towards a prospective agreement regarding Greenland and the wider Arctic region. He confirmed the decision not to impose the scheduled tariffs on February 1.

Previously, Trump had threatened the UK and European allies with 10% tariffs starting February 1 if they didn’t comply with his Greenland purchase ambitions, warning of a tariff increase to 25% by June on NATO partners.

This episode aligns with what financial experts term the Trump Always Chickens Out (TACO) pattern, highlighting Trump’s tendency to retract controversial proposals when met with negative market reactions.

Further talks are planned regarding the Golden Dome defense system in Greenland, to be overseen by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, as per Trump’s announcement.

Trump’s rationale for acquiring Greenland revolves around national security concerns, citing threats from Russia and China. His readiness to deploy troops to invade the Danish territory raised alarm, prompting allies like the UK to consider bolstering security in the region as an alternative to a US intervention.

During a session at PMQs, Starmer reiterated the UK’s refusal to succumb to tariff threats over objections to Trump’s Greenland ambitions. He condemned attempts to pressure NATO allies regarding Greenland as unjust.

Starmer mentioned the upcoming visit of the Danish prime minister to the UK, emphasizing Britain’s unwavering stance on Greenland’s future amidst tariff threats.

In a sharp critique of Trump, the PM accused him of using manipulative language regarding the Chagos Islands deal to exert pressure on the UK and undermine its principles on Greenland’s future.
