“Royal Canadian Legions Embrace Diversity and Community”

The Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver’s Kitsilano area offers a unique blend of activities, from veterans enjoying drinks in the traditional pub to yoga enthusiasts unwinding upstairs amidst military relics. One regular, Hannah, finds solace and connection through yoga sessions at the Legion, highlighting the welcoming atmosphere that aims to attract a younger demographic.

Across Canada, Legions are diversifying their membership base by providing affordable meals, meaningful events, and a strong sense of community. This year, in honor of the Royal Canadian Legion’s centenary, free membership is being offered to newcomers nationwide, emphasizing that military background is not a prerequisite for participation.

While Legions remain steadfast in their support for veterans and community activities, they are also evolving to cater to a broader audience. Nujma Bond, spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Legion, acknowledges the influx of new members and fresh ideas that are propelling growth and innovation within the organization.

Despite recent closures of some branches due to financial constraints, Legions like the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, have successfully adapted by offering affordable dinners, concerts, and inclusive services to the public. Looking ahead, the Bala Legion is planning to expand its facilities to provide 110 affordable rental units, ensuring sustainability for the future.

President Dennis Mills underlines the importance of attracting new members to ensure the vitality and impact of Legions in serving their communities. The call to action extends to all Canadians to join and contribute to the continued legacy of the Royal Canadian Legion.
