Lost Tortoise Molly Reunited with Family

In a surprising turn of events, Molly, an African spurred tortoise not native to the Canadian prairie, was discovered meandering at a slow pace near Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake region. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at Oak Hammock, and her colleagues were astonished by the unexpected appearance of the 36-kilogram tortoise, as they had initially dismissed reports of tortoise sightings assuming they were misidentifications of native snapping turtles.

The unusual sighting was eventually confirmed through the iNaturalist app, prompting Malchuk and her team to embark on a search for the misplaced tortoise, which was quickly located in the marsh’s parking lot. The staff provided care for Molly, feeding her cucumbers and flower petals, and organizing guided tours for her until her owners were traced through social media and she was reunited with her family.

It was revealed that Molly had escaped from her family’s yard, possibly slipping through a gap in the fence during renovations. Despite the peculiar circumstances of Molly’s journey to the marsh, the exact means by which she traversed the 20 kilometers from her home remains a mystery. Speculations suggest that perhaps a well-intentioned individual relocated her to the wetland, unaware of the risks to a tortoise in such an environment.

While the precise details of Molly’s adventure may never be fully understood, the heartwarming reunion with her family marked the end of her unexpected escapade in the unfamiliar surroundings of Oak Hammock Marsh.
