Two Canadian researchers have been honored in a global image competition that showcases ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition recognized 11 photos taken by researchers from around the world at different career stages. These images portray animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural settings.
Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the competition’s research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” On the other hand, Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher associated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, clinched the “protecting our planet” category with his photo named “A bridge between past and present.”
According to Brennan, images play a crucial role in building public trust in environmental education and ecological research. He emphasized the significance of visually documenting scientific work to communicate its value effectively. Brennan’s winning photo, “Intertidal education,” captures a moment of curiosity among undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B., under the moonlit sky.
Tian’s winning image, “A bridge between past and present,” showcases the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River through a composition of 33 drone photos. This aerial view illustrates the impact of human activity on ecosystems, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts.
Both researchers believe that sharing their research through visual storytelling helps raise awareness about environmental issues and fosters a deeper connection with nature. Through their captivating images, they aim to inspire natural empathy and encourage viewers to appreciate and protect the beauty of our planet.
