“Quebec Fans Rally to Save The Simpsons Dubbing”

Growing up in Quebec, Joshua Biasotto developed a fondness for watching The Simpsons in Québécois, the French dialect. He cherished the show’s quirky characters, irreverent humor, and satirical themes, along with his admiration for Quebec dubbing. When Corus Entertainment’s Télétoon opted not to renew the show’s Canadian broadcast rights after 35 years, Biasotto took action by launching an online petition titled “Sauvons le doublage québécois des Simpsons” or “Let’s save the Quebec dub of The Simpsons.”

The Quebec version of the show featured local expressions and cultural references, making it distinctly Quebecois. Characters spoke in regional Quebec accents, using colloquial dialects like joual. The show’s adaptation also replaced U.S. references with local Quebec elements, such as swapping upstate New York with the Lac-Saint-Jean region and towns like Jonquière and Alma in the Québécois version.

The public outcry to preserve Les Simpson tapped into a broader sentiment beyond nostalgia, reflecting Quebec’s tradition of adapting international entertainment to align with its language and culture. Dubbing in Quebec has a rich history, dating back to the post-World War II era, allowing audiences to enjoy global content with familiar voices and references.

Dubbing is not merely about translating dialogue; it involves adapting humor and cultural nuances for local audiences. Quebec, with its predominantly French-speaking population, views dubbing as a means of safeguarding its language and identity. The recent revival of Les Simpson, following a successful petition by Biasotto, highlights the significance of fan support and the resilience of Quebec’s dubbing industry.

The return of Les Simpson, scheduled to premiere on Noovo on September 9 after Bell Media’s deal with Disney Entertainment, signifies a victory for Quebec’s dubbing community. As Quebec’s dubbing industry thrives amid increased demand from streaming platforms, professionals like Elizabeth Pélissier at difuze emphasize the importance of preserving local talent in dubbing productions. The industry’s growth presents challenges like tighter production schedules, but it also underscores the dedication of dubbing professionals in Quebec.

While concerns about AI-generated dubbing loom, the commitment to continue dubbing Les Simpson with local talent showcases the enduring appeal and impact of the show. The revival not only celebrates the show’s popularity but also underscores the influence of devoted fans in ensuring its return and attracting new audiences.
