Markham is gearing up for an exciting weekend as it hosts the NTT IndyCar Series, along with other motorsports events, for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy. While IndyCar has a history in Toronto, this will mark the first time the race is held outside the city on a brand-new track layout.
The 3.52-kilometre, 12-turn course will wind through various locations, including the Unionville GO station, York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre. For those planning to attend, it is recommended to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive on Highway 407 with parking available west of the event grounds.
In preparation for the event, Metrolinx is increasing service on the Stouffville Line with additional trips scheduled. York Region Transit will also have enhanced service, and Markham is offering shuttle service between designated parking areas and the event site.
Residents have been adjusting to the construction impacts as roads are repaved and grandstands are installed for the event. Several roads in Markham Centre, including parts of Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard, will be closed until Monday at 6 a.m., with some closures extending until August 27 for track dismantling.
The main event on Sunday will feature IndyCar, with Spaniard Alex Palou leading the points and expected to perform well. Other drivers to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also be participating in support series races.
Drivers have noted the differences in the Markham track compared to Toronto, emphasizing the smooth surface and unique challenges it presents. Tickets for the weekend races are available on the event website, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions open for free attendance as part of Fan Friday, encouraging donations to Make-A-Wish Canada.
