“Filipina Canadian’s Hockey Journey Unites Nation”

Erlinda Tan, a Filipina Canadian and Edmonton Oilers enthusiast residing in Vancouver, shares her experience as a hockey fan in Canada. She vividly recalls witnessing the iconic 2010 Winter Olympics final where Sidney Crosby scored the winning goal for Canada against the U.S., uniting the nation in jubilation. This moment sparked her curiosity about hockey, leading to her immersion in the sport as she settled into her new life in the country.

Attending her first live hockey game in 2014, watching the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Anaheim Ducks, was a pivotal moment for Tan. The electric atmosphere of the arena and the camaraderie among fans left a lasting impression on her. She gradually discovered the significance of hockey in Canadian culture, from workplace discussions to city-wide rivalries like the “Battle of Alberta.”

As Tan’s passion for hockey grew, she integrated the sport into her daily life, watching games on TV and adorning her home with Oilers memorabilia. Moving to Vancouver in 2016, she found a kindred spirit in Mike, a fellow hockey enthusiast, reigniting her love for the sport. Together, they embraced hockey as a shared interest, bonding over games and establishing their own game-day traditions.

Through her relationship with Mike, Tan deepened her understanding of hockey, learning the nuances of the game and embracing its rituals. Despite their differing backgrounds and interests, they found common ground in their shared love for sports. Tan reciprocated by introducing Mike to tennis, bridging the gap between their sporting preferences.

Attending hockey games at Rogers Arena in Vancouver became a cherished pastime for the couple, symbolizing their diverse yet harmonious relationship. As they proudly sported jerseys of rival teams, they humorously proclaimed, “Love conquers all,” celebrating their unity amidst friendly sports rivalry. Tan’s journey from a curious observer to a dedicated hockey fan exemplifies the profound impact of the sport in fostering connections, sparking conversations, and enriching personal experiences in Canada.

Tan’s narrative encapsulates the transformative power of hockey as more than just a game, but a cultural phenomenon that unites communities and shapes personal relationships, reflecting the essence of Canadian identity.
