“Fans Gather in P.E.I. for ‘Road to Avonlea’ Convention”

In her early years in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV series set in Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she watched “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, especially admiring Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the 1990s production. Learning that Ruffman would be present at a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the show, Czajka eagerly purchased a ticket to attend.

Describing Ruffman as her childhood equivalent of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at being in P.E.I. for the convention. Fans of “Road to Avonlea” journeyed from various corners of the globe to participate in the sold-out event. The acclaimed Canadian series, broadcast in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.

The show revolved around the adventures of young Sarah Stanley, portrayed by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her late mother’s relatives at the turn of the 20th century. Loosely inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the series garnered widespread popularity worldwide.

The convention spanned three days and featured activities such as oyster and wine tastings, along with panel discussions involving the show’s cast and crew. Attendees also embarked on tours across the Island to explore filming locations from the series, as well as Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the Cavendish house that inspired her renowned work, “Anne of Green Gables.”

Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, the convention’s organizer, emphasized the enduring appeal of the show, noting its themes of kindness, friendship, and community. Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, expressed gratitude for the emotional connection with fans and the enduring legacy of “Road to Avonlea.” Czajka shared her joy in rewatching the series with her children, highlighting the rarity of finding a show suitable for family viewing.

The convention’s success and the ongoing enthusiasm for “Road to Avonlea” underscore the enduring impact of the beloved series, resonating with both longtime fans and new generations of viewers.
