A child is in critical condition at the hospital with severe injuries allegedly caused by their father, leaving the baby’s survival uncertain. The court was informed of the child’s grave state as lawyers contested a decision to grant bail to the 33-year-old accused of harming the infant.
Prosecutor Aoife Jennings emphasized to Lady Chief Justice Dame Siobhan Keegan the severity of the situation, stating that the child’s injuries could be life-altering or life-limiting if survived. The father faces charges of child cruelty and causing serious physical harm to the child in January 2026.
The court heard that the defendant, responsible for the child’s care, allegedly assaulted the child, leading to unnecessary suffering. Additionally, the child suffered serious physical harm, and the defendant, who had regular contact with the child, was aware of the risks but failed to protect the child.
During the appeal hearing, it was mentioned that the child’s mother had also been charged and had refused crucial scans for the baby’s care. Despite being granted bail initially, the defendant faced stringent conditions. The prosecution raised concerns about potential further offenses, witness tampering, and flight risks.
The child was rushed to the hospital after being found in cardiac arrest, and subsequent examinations revealed brain bleeds and a skull fracture. The defendant admitted to shaking the baby, but doctors suspected repeated child abuse due to older brain injuries. The child’s mother, also facing charges, was released on police bail.
The defendant, now in custody, expressed regret for his actions to the police. The court emphasized the seriousness of the case but allowed bail with strict conditions to manage potential risks. The defendant must adhere to various conditions, including residing at an approved location, providing a surety, and avoiding contact with witnesses.
The court proceedings will continue in March to address the ongoing case.
