Users of various devices, including Samsung models, are facing screen flickering issues while using the Gmail app. Some individuals have reported instances where text disappears, while others encounter blank white boxes instead of their email content.
Expressing frustration, Gmail enthusiasts have turned to social media to voice their concerns. One user, Jeremiah, took to X to address the problem, stating, “@gmail, when will Android function correctly on folding phones like my Samsung Fold? The persistent flickering on the inner screen for the past four days is utterly unacceptable.”
Similar grievances have surfaced on Google’s support forums, with a user detailing, “Upon opening an email, the screen flickers, rendering it impossible to read. Despite attempting various troubleshooting steps such as force-stopping the app, clearing the cache, restarting the tablet, and updating all software, the issue remains unresolved.”
Google product expert Kimiya Kitani has identified the root cause as a potential problem with Android System WebView, a crucial component enabling apps to display web content within the application interface. Kitani mentioned that certain devices, particularly Samsung tablets, are experiencing intermittent difficulties linked to Android System WebView, with Google already aware of the issue.
Although the exact number of affected users is unknown, reports indicate that Samsung foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Fold series and specific Galaxy tablets are among the most impacted gadgets.
In the interim, a temporary workaround has been suggested by Kitani. Rotating the device has proven effective in halting the screen flickering issue. The recommended method involves opening the email in portrait mode, rotating the device to landscape mode until the screen stabilizes, and then reverting to portrait mode.
For now, this workaround serves as a simple solution while affected users await a permanent fix from Google.
