Police have initiated an inquiry following the death of a woman in an unfortunate incident on the M6 near Wigan.
The highway was shut down for several hours earlier today as law enforcement responded to a welfare concern at the Downall Green Road bridge over the southbound lane this morning. Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene, but the woman was declared deceased on-site.
Formal identification is pending, as confirmed by Greater Manchester Police. There are no suspected foul play circumstances surrounding the woman’s passing. The M6 was reopened around 4 pm following the extended closure.
An investigation by the police has been set in motion. Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed or was involved in the incident, occurring just before 8 am, to reach out to them.
This includes individuals who observed the incident, may have had a collision on the roadway in that area, or possess dashcam/CCTV footage of the event.
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is now seeking additional information on the fatal collision from potential witnesses.
