A tragic incident occurred during a bungee jumping activity when a teenage girl fell to her death due to a miscommunication by an instructor with poor English skills. Seventeen-year-old Vera Mol, from the Netherlands, lost her life in August 2015 while attempting her first bungee jump from a bridge in northern Spain. The fatal accident happened as her safety rope was not properly secured, leading to her falling approximately 32 meters into the riverbed below.
The unfortunate event unfolded when Vera, part of a group of 13 Dutch and Belgian teenagers, was given unclear instructions by the instructor. Mistakenly interpreting the instructor’s words as “now jump” instead of “no jump,” she proceeded to leap off the bridge, resulting in the tragic outcome.
Authorities determined that the instructor’s inadequate command of English significantly contributed to the accident. Described as “very bad,” his language proficiency was deemed insufficient to safely guide foreigners in such extreme activities. As a result, the court held him responsible for the fatal incident, along with the bungee jumping company’s director who faced charges of negligent homicide.
Flowtrack, the company operating the bungee jumping service, acknowledged the misunderstanding that led to Vera’s death. They admitted that she received confusing instructions and was not properly secured to the bridge before jumping. Additionally, the court revealed a series of safety lapses, including the failure to attach Vera to a safety line during the ascent and the absence of a secure waiting area for the group.
Moreover, the company neglected to verify Vera’s age, as she was underage and required parental consent to participate. In response to the tragedy, Vera’s family has called for stricter safety measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
