“White Nationalist’s Canada Entry Sparks Concerns”

A white nationalist from Austria, known for promoting extremist views, expressed his desire for entry into Canada to attend a conference scheduled in Hamilton. Martin Sellner, who was banned from the UK in 2019 for security reasons, is slated to speak at an event organized by the Dominion Society advocating for “remigration,” the mass expulsion of immigrants.

Sellner faced travel permit cancellations in the US and a three-year ban in Germany due to his associations with extremist activities. Despite these restrictions, Sellner’s potential entry into Canada remains uncertain, as Canadian officials refrain from disclosing information citing privacy laws. The Immigration Minister’s office emphasized that individuals entering Canada must meet admissibility criteria outlined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, which includes factors like involvement in violence, terrorism, or organized crime.

Sellner’s anticipated presence in Hamilton has sparked concerns among experts and local authorities. Ameil Joseph, an anti-racism scholar based in Hamilton, suggested that given Sellner’s restrictions in other countries, Canada should consider similar measures. Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath has taken steps to inform venue owners about the Dominion Society’s ideology, asserting that there is no place for hate or discrimination in the city.

The Dominion Society, a self-proclaimed nationalist group in Canada, propagates the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, promoting anti-immigration sentiments and advocating for the mass deportation of various groups. Joseph highlighted the dangerous implications of such ideologies, emphasizing the need to combat white nationalist movements proactively.

Daniel Tyrie, chair of the Dominion Society, defended Sellner’s potential visit, labeling any attempt to block it as political persecution. He criticized Mayor Horwath’s stance and maintained that individuals, even those with differing views, have the right to assemble peacefully. However, Joseph warned against the normalization of extremist narratives and urged vigilance in addressing the underlying anxieties that these groups exploit.

Experts like Raqib Naik underscored the manipulation of economic insecurities by white supremacist groups to advance their agendas, such as the remigration concept. Naik highlighted how these movements exploit genuine concerns about housing, job markets, and affordability to push discriminatory policies. The US State Department’s migration policy, referred to as remigration, has also drawn attention to the broader implications of such ideologies.

As discussions around Sellner’s potential entry continue, authorities and community members remain vigilant in safeguarding against the spread of extremist ideologies and ensuring inclusivity and tolerance within their communities.
