“Unifor Begins Talks with GM for New Labor Agreement”

Unifor and General Motors have commenced discussions for a new labor agreement, initiating negotiations at a bargaining table in downtown Toronto on Monday. The union represents over 4,600 members across various Ontario GM facilities, including the Oshawa assembly plant, the CAMI facility in Ingersoll, as well as operations in St. Catharines and Woodstock.

Unifor’s national president, Lana Payne, and Jack Uppal, president and managing director at GM Canada, marked the commencement of talks with a handshake. The negotiation room was set up with chairs, with Payne positioned in the middle and Uppal seated opposite her.

In a press release on Monday, Payne stated, “We’re approaching this new round of negotiations with a strong foundation laid by the pattern agreement with Ford, aiming for meaningful discussions on company operations and the future of auto jobs at GM in Canada.” Unifor has set a deadline of August 21 to reach a tentative agreement with GM.

Uppal, in a separate press release on Monday, expressed the company’s respect for the collective bargaining process and the importance of its employees in its success. He highlighted the substantial investments made in Canadian manufacturing plants since 2020, totaling $3.3 billion, to secure future Canadian jobs through next-generation products.

In July, Unifor members approved a new three-year contract with Ford, which includes annual pay increases of three percent. The agreement also encompasses a no-closure commitment and program commitments at all Ford facilities, such as the addition of a third shift at its engine plant in Essex, Ont., projected for 2029.

Unifor and Ford also agreed on a program to facilitate the pathway to full employment by July 2027 for laid-off workers from Ford’s Oakville assembly plant in Ontario. This agreement was considered a successful pattern-setting negotiation by the union.

As Unifor engages in negotiations with the remaining Detroit Three automakers, challenges facing the sector, such as U.S. tariffs, trade uncertainties, and the emergence of Chinese electric vehicles in Canada, are being closely monitored. Payne emphasized the importance of advocating for the industry and navigating potentially tough discussions ahead.

The negotiation process between Unifor and the automakers aligns with broader industry challenges and uncertainties, including the impact of various trade agreements and market dynamics.
