Robin Williams’s Children Revive Father’s Instagram

Robin Williams’s children have reactivated their father’s dormant Instagram account to counter the proliferation of unauthorized AI versions of the late actor and comedian. Following Williams’s passing on August 11, 2014, at 63 years old, it was determined that he had Lewy body dementia.

In a recent post on the “therobinwilliams” Instagram account, Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams expressed their intention to maintain a safe and authentic space where they can share their father’s stories, photos, videos, and memories. They emphasized the importance of preserving his legacy with sincerity and warmth. This post marked the first activity on the account since July 31, 2014.

Acknowledging Williams’s influential career in film, television, and stage, which included iconic roles in productions like “Mork & Mindy,” “Good Morning Vietnam,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Jumanji,” the post highlighted his achievements. Williams received an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in “Good Will Hunting” and a special achievement Golden Globe Award for voicing Genie in “Aladdin.”

The influx of AI-generated videos featuring Robin Williams performing various acts, including stand-up comedy and providing commentary on pop culture topics like the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park,” has sparked concerns. These videos, produced using OpenAI’s now-defunct video creation and social media app, Sora, have faced criticism for their potential misuse.

Zelda Williams, an actor and director, has been vocal in her opposition to AI recreations of her father. She has publicly denounced the circulation of AI videos depicting Robin Williams, urging fans to refrain from sharing such content. Reviving her father’s Instagram account is part of her initiative to combat the misuse of AI technology.

While some, like actor Matthew Lawrence, have expressed interest in utilizing AI to preserve Williams’s voice for future projects, they stress the importance of obtaining consent from the Williams family before proceeding. Similarly, Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., has condemned the unauthorized use of her father’s likeness in AI applications.

Furthermore, the growing trend of creating AI replicas of deceased celebrities, such as Val Kilmer, who is set to star in the upcoming film “As Deep As the Grave,” has raised ethical concerns. Kilmer’s estate granted permission for his digital replication, highlighting the complexities surrounding the posthumous use of AI technology in the entertainment industry.
