“UK Phone Users Urged to Switch to Digital Voice by 2027”

A significant change is on the horizon for millions of phone users in the UK, emphasizing the need for homeowners to take action promptly. The traditional copper landlines that have facilitated communication for decades are being phased out and replaced by a new technology known as Digital Voice, which utilizes broadband for making calls.

The transition to Digital Voice is not only essential to meet current communication requirements but also promises enhanced reliability and introduces new features like clearer call quality, call forwarding to smartphones, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages.

Scheduled to take effect from January 2027, the major overhaul is rapidly approaching, prompting BT to launch an awareness campaign led by Clare Balding under the slogan ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch.’ The initiative urges households to inspect their landline setups and ensure readiness for the digital era.

This initiative coincides with recent research indicating that many Brits tend to procrastinate essential tasks, assuming that functional systems do not necessitate immediate attention.

Clare Balding stressed the importance of responding promptly to service provider communications to avoid disruptions to vital services. BT reassures customers that they are committed to guiding them through the transition process, with the assurance that existing phone numbers will likely be retained, and costs will remain stable, without any expected increase in bills during the migration.

Most households will simply need to connect their current phones to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket, with minimal need for engineer visits. However, in exceptional cases where issues arise, contacting the service provider for assistance may be necessary.

Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, emphasized the significance of heeding messages from service providers to maintain essential connections amid the shift to digital landlines, which represents a substantial upgrade to the UK’s communication infrastructure, offering more reliable and secure technology to keep individuals connected to vital services.

BT also advises customers with special requirements, such as telecare device users, to promptly notify their providers to ensure appropriate support arrangements are in place.

Digital Voice by BT is a modern home phone service that replaces copper connections with broadband technology, offering advanced features like Multi Call and call diversion to mobile phones. The service guarantees improved call quality and eliminates issues like crackling conversations, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance.

For most households, transitioning to Digital Voice will not disrupt their phone usage habits, as the cost of the new service is bundled with broadband charges, eliminating any additional fees specifically for Digital Voice services.
