“Longest-Serving UK Employee Passes at 102”

Walter Orthmann, a unique case in the UK workforce, defied the norm by remaining with the same company for over 84 years after starting as a temporary worker at 15. In a world where layoffs are common, with about 45% of employees facing redundancy, Walter shared his secret to job longevity: staying curious, continuously learning, and pursuing his passion. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding stress, and finding joy in one’s work to make time fly by effortlessly.

His colleagues hailed him as a mentor and praised his adaptability and willingness to help others. Born in Brazil to German parents, Walter’s journey from a packing assistant to a successful Sales Manager showcased his dedication and work ethic. Brazil’s labor laws, particularly regarding retirement age and pension requirements, played a role in his extended tenure. Despite reaching 102 years of age, Walter never considered retiring, embodying his philosophy of living in the present and enjoying each day as it comes.

Walter’s passing in August 2024 marked the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and positivity that inspired those around him.
