While chatting in the church lobby after a Sunday service, a fellow parishioner remarked on the striking resemblance between Lily and her grandmother figure, Debbie.
Their shared features, including light wavy hair and infectious smiles, often led people to mistake them for biological relatives. Despite not being related by blood, Debbie played a significant role as an adopted grandparent in Lily’s life.
Debbie became a part of their lives after Julie and her husband relocated to Ottawa for work, and Lily was born in 2017 after a prolonged struggle with infertility. The joy of parenthood quickly turned into anguish when Lily was diagnosed with a brain tumor at just four months old.
Throughout Lily’s grueling treatment journey, Debbie emerged as a pillar of support, stepping in as Lily’s cherished guardian in hospitals across multiple cities.
Debbie, on the brink of retirement and without grandchildren of her own, became Lily’s primary caregiver in the absence of other family members who faced health challenges or geographical constraints.
Lily’s medical journey, marked by severe health issues and surgeries, has been arduous, but she continues to defy odds and thrive with Debbie’s unwavering support.
Despite Lily’s disabilities and ongoing medical needs, she finds solace and joy in Debbie’s presence, turning to her for comfort and care during challenging times.
With Lily now in Grade 1 and making progress despite her health struggles, the Jewett family acknowledges Debbie’s invaluable contribution, compensating her for her dedicated assistance.
