“From Biomedical Engineer to Cowgirl: Embracing Unconventional Success”

Growing up, my upbringing ingrained in me the conventional path to success: attending university, pursuing a career in my field, getting married, buying a house, and having children. This narrative, passed down from my parents and reinforced by the high school guidance counselor, was the roadmap I was following in 2016 as I completed my second year in biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph.

After unsuccessfully applying to engineering jobs in Ontario, I unexpectedly landed a job at a horseback trail riding outfit in Banff National Park for the summer. While this opportunity diverged significantly from my original plan, my childhood experience on a family farm in southern Ontario gave me the confidence that I could excel in this role.

In Banff, I had the chance to fulfill my childhood dream of riding in the mountains, guiding guests through pine forests, driving horse teams along the Bow River, and leading visitors to picturesque wildflower meadows teeming with elk.

This experience reshaped my perspective on what constitutes a fulfilling life. I discovered that happiness lies in cherishing simple moments, like quiet mornings before a busy day or the gratitude for residing in a breathtaking environment. Even enduring long, rainy workdays with numb toes was bearable knowing I could warm up by a fire with a cup of tea afterward.

Seasonal work not only introduced me to incredible individuals but also broadened my definition of a fulfilling life. I met peers in their late 20s taking career breaks, international workers funding travel through seasonal jobs, and full-time seasonal workers transitioning between summer and winter roles. These friendships profoundly influenced my perception of a meaningful life.

The close bonds formed during seasonal work, unlike those in traditional environments, were intense and enduring. Despite the inevitable goodbyes as seasonal workers parted ways, the lasting connections made it worthwhile. These experiences taught me that success is not confined to a singular path and can encompass career breaks, changes, or unconventional choices.

Following my engineering degree, I pursued my cowgirl aspirations by working at a ranch in Cranbrook, B.C., against my family’s initial reservations. Despite their concerns, they eventually recognized the value of my diverse experiences, which allowed me to explore Canada and forge lasting friendships.

My current role in international sales enables me to continue traveling and exploring the world, a pursuit bolstered by the confidence gained through my seasonal work adventures. While I appreciate my current job, the allure of returning to a simpler life surrounded by mountains and horses occasionally beckons.

Embracing my dreams and crafting a life I adore has redefined success for me. The evolution of my perspective on success, influenced by seasonal work and diverse experiences, encourages others to explore, experiment, and savor life to the fullest.
