German authorities are currently investigating a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to intensify retaliation against nations supporting Ukraine. Lavrov mentioned in an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, that they will employ stronger measures to dismantle resources aiding Kyiv’s war efforts.
The drone, containing an unidentified explosive device, was found in the cargo operations area near the south runway of Leipzig airport, which is considered critical infrastructure. Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport facilitating the transportation of military supplies, including armaments and ammunition, to Ukraine through flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.
The presence of the drone next to a Ukrainian cargo plane has raised concerns in Germany, with the country’s interior minister deeming it a “new level of danger.” Alexander Dobrindt stated that the incident appears to be part of a sophisticated hybrid threat scenario rather than the work of amateurs.
While German authorities continue to investigate the incident without disclosing the drone’s origin, U.S. intelligence sources have suggested potential links to the Russian government. Berlin has responded cautiously, enhancing anti-drone capabilities and refraining from premature attributions until the investigation progresses further.
The German government faces ongoing challenges from Russia, including the use of drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations across Europe, especially concerning the upcoming regional elections in Germany. Dobrindt emphasized the country’s vulnerability to constant hybrid warfare attacks and the need for heightened vigilance.
In a separate incident in 2024, U.S. and western intelligence uncovered a plot by Russia targeting the CEO of a German defense contractor, Rheinmetall. Recent arrests in Germany of individuals suspected of espionage and sabotage activities on behalf of Russia further highlight the persistent threats faced by the country.
The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russian interference in Germany through online campaigns like Operation Overload, aiming to exploit internal divisions and undermine Ukraine’s efforts. The ISD reported that Russia utilizes disinformation tactics to influence German politics and society, particularly during election periods.
Hans-Jakob Schindler, a senior director at the Counter Extremism Project, emphasized the aggressive nature of Russia’s actions, including the recent drone incident in Leipzig, as an escalation of interference tactics. He highlighted the urgent need to define the boundaries between defense measures and direct conflict to address such provocations effectively.
Schindler pointed out Lavrov’s statements as a departure from Russia’s previous denials of involvement in hybrid warfare operations in Western nations. He interpreted Lavrov’s remarks as a veiled admission of guilt and a warning of heightened aggression against Europe, the West, and NATO.
