“Bald Range Fire Destroys 150 Structures, Evacuees Return”

The Bald Range fire has caused an estimated 150 structures to be damaged or destroyed according to the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen. Evacuees from Summerland and surrounding areas are gradually returning, with more anticipated to come back soon. The B.C. Wildfire Service plans to focus firefighting efforts northwest, anticipating hotter and drier weather ahead. Lightning strikes have ignited approximately 130 wildfires across British Columbia as of Monday morning.

In a recent update, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen announced the extent of property damage from the Bald Range fire, with about 40 structures affected within Summerland’s boundaries. Efforts are underway to contact property owners and assess the types of structures impacted. Summerland’s mayor confirmed completion of damage assessments, allowing some residents to move from evacuation orders to alerts.

Officials are closely monitoring the fire’s progression, particularly near the Princeton-Summerland Road corridor. Despite challenges, there remains a considerable distance between the fire and the community. While smoke and ground fires may persist, residents are advised to report any concerns outside the fire perimeter. Firefighting activities are shifting towards forested areas as weather conditions intensify.

Residents are facing uncertainties regarding property survival, but notifications and support are being provided as assessments are finalized. The return home for many is described as a mix of relief and sadness, acknowledging the long road to recovery ahead. The B.C. Wildfire Service warns of lingering smoke due to light winds, impacting air quality across central and southern regions.

Assistance from various provinces and international teams, including Mexico and Australia, has bolstered firefighting efforts amid challenging conditions. Firefighters on the ground are adapting to the dynamic nature of the fires, with weather shifts affecting fire behavior. The Pear Lake wildfire near Clinton remains a significant concern, with disposal services being offered to returning residents in affected areas. Highway closures and continued firefighting efforts mark the ongoing battle against wildfires in British Columbia.
