During the ongoing search for 11 individuals aboard a plane that went missing and is suspected to have crashed, a body has been discovered along with scattered aircraft wreckage. The aircraft disappeared while approaching a mountainous area on Sulawesi island, Indonesia, amid cloudy conditions. A man’s body was recovered from a deep ravine on the slope of Mount Bulusaraung, near the debris site.
Muhammad Arif Anwar, the head of Makassar’s Search and Rescue Office, confirmed the body retrieval operation is currently in progress. In addition to the body, search teams have located more wreckage, including parts of the plane’s frame, passenger seats, and what appears to be the engine.
Although the body has not been identified yet, it is believed to be linked to the turboprop ATR 42-500 aircraft that disappeared from radar on its journey from Yogyakarta to Makassar. The aircraft, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, was carrying eight crew members and three passengers from the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry on a maritime surveillance mission.
Search efforts intensified after the discovery of major sections of the aircraft, aiding in narrowing down the search area. Ground and air rescue teams are persevering despite challenging weather conditions and difficult terrain to locate any potential survivors. Over 100 personnel, including elite army forces, are involved in the operation, facing heavy rain, fog, and limited visibility.
Indonesia heavily relies on air and sea transport to connect its numerous islands, leading to frequent transportation incidents in recent years. The country continues to address safety concerns in the transportation sector to prevent such tragedies.
