Amazon has launched a new service offering ultra-fast grocery deliveries in less than 30 minutes. Customers can choose from a wide range of groceries and household items, including essentials like milk, eggs, nappies, and medicines.
The e-commerce giant is directly competing with supermarkets that already collaborate with delivery firms to provide similar rapid services. Last September, Amazon announced the closure of its Amazon Fresh grocery stores, leading to the introduction of the new Amazon Now service.
Currently being tested in selected postcodes in the Southwark area of London using bike riders recruited through Amazon Flex, the service aims to expand to more areas in the coming months. Amazon UK country manager, John Boumphrey, emphasized the speed and convenience of Amazon Now, stating it enhances the company’s commitment to faster delivery.
In addition to its partnership with Gopuff for rapid deliveries, Amazon Now offers discounted delivery fees for Prime members, starting at £1.99 per order. Non-Prime members are charged £3.99, with a £2 fee for orders under £15. Prime members already enjoy fast and free delivery on millions of items.
Amazon plans to share more details about the service in the following months as it strives to enhance the shopping experience for customers in the UK. The company decided to focus on online delivery services after closing its physical grocery stores, citing significant growth opportunities in the online delivery sector.
The company’s move towards ultra-fast deliveries is independent of its store closures, with Amazon reaffirming its commitment to providing customers with convenient and efficient shopping options. Amazon continues to invest in expanding its online grocery and household essentials offerings, recognizing this sector as a rapidly growing segment of its UK operations.
