“Over 585K Volunteers Unite for Great British Spring Clean”

The Mirror expresses immense gratitude to the 585,038 volunteers who came together for Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean, collecting a remarkable 451,887 bags of trash to safeguard wildlife, beaches, and green spaces in the fight against the waste crisis affecting the nation.

Additionally, almost 70,000 students participated in the largest environmental mass action, endorsed by the Mirror and supported by key figures including PM Keir Starmer, Environment Secretary Emma Renyolds, Labour MPs Mary Creagh and Angela Rayner, and celebrities like Springwatch presenter Megan McCubbin.

Noteworthy among the litter heroes were Rainbows, Brownies, and Guides from Girlguiding Kidderminster, who collaborated to gather an impressive 7,788 pieces of litter, demonstrating teamwork and community pride. Meanwhile, various mosques and community organizations joined forces, such as the Karimia Institute, Fiveways Centre (Masjid Al-QUBA Sherwood), and Green Academy Trust, as part of the Nottingham Council of Mosques’ initiative to combat litter across the city.

Individuals like Judi Herman, accompanied by her Bedlington Terrier, known as the Litter Hound, have been actively cleaning up their local areas. Furthermore, there are inspiring initiatives focused on reusing collected rubbish, such as Flora Blathwayt’s Washed Up Cards, where plastic waste is transformed into handmade cards with a message of environmental care and hope.

Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy, commended the dedication of volunteers nationwide during the Great British Spring Clean, encouraging nominations for outstanding volunteers on their website. If you wish to recognize a deserving volunteer, please visit Keep Britain Tidy for more information.
