“UK’s Final Boxing Day Hunt Amid Fox Hunting Ban Controversy”

The final traditional Boxing Day hunt occurred this morning in the UK, with riders gathering to engage in the contentious activity shortly after a Labour report unveiled the Government’s intention to fully outlaw fox hunting.

Boxing Day hunts unfolded throughout England today, as numerous riders were spotted early in the day with their dogs following a pre-laid animal scent trail. Participants defended the event as promoting physical and mental well-being without causing harm to animals. Notably, hunting advocate Nigel Farage observed a hunt at Chiddingstone Castle in Kent.

However, amidst the hunters, protesters raised concerns that the practice could lead to illegal acts targeting innocent animals, a stance supported by the Labour Party in its recently released animal welfare plan.

Fox hunting has been prohibited in all four UK nations for the past two decades, following Tony Blair’s administration’s ban on what was viewed as a cruel practice involving horseback riders and packs of hounds hunting and killing foxes. Despite the ban, certain permissions remain in place allowing for “trail hunting” where a foxless scent is used. Critics argue that this loophole is exploited to continue hunting activities, with Labour branding it a “smokescreen” for brutal killings in their manifesto.

Representing the League Against Cruel Sports, Emma Judd highlighted that hunts seldom lay actual trails, and even when they do, it poses a threat to local wildlife and livestock. She emphasized that animals are inadvertently harmed during trail hunting activities.

Hunters assert that the activity is intended for socializing and enjoyment, as they took to the streets for what could be their final hunt today. Nigel Farage’s strong advocacy for hunting in the UK has been known, while critics of fox hunting and protesters made their presence felt at various hunt locations across the country.

Labour’s proposed measures aim to close all hunting-related loopholes, as the cruel practice has also been found to negatively impact the hounds involved.
