The Ottawa Redblacks have now set a new record for the longest losing streak in the modern era of the CFL. They suffered their 15th consecutive defeat on Friday night against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, surpassing the previous mark set by the Shreveport Pirates in 1994. According to CFL historian Steve Daniel, this makes Ottawa the new record holder for the modern era.
Jimmy Fata, a dedicated Redblacks fan, expressed disappointment with the team’s current situation and emphasized the need to identify and address the underlying issues. The tradition of cutting a “wood cookie” for every touchdown at home games has been a rare occurrence lately, reflecting the team’s struggles on the field.
In addition to the modern-day record, the Redblacks’ losing streak now ranks as the third-longest in CFL history dating back to 1907. Another loss would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second spot, with the record held by two Ottawa CFL clubs from the late 1920s and early 1930s.
Daniel highlighted the evolution of professional football in Canada post-World War II, contrasting the amateur nature of the sport during the previous record-setting eras. He emphasized the need for the Redblacks to focus on rebuilding their roster, particularly on defense, to improve their performance on the field.
Despite the team’s struggles, Fata stressed the importance of unwavering support from fans during tough times, likening it to supporting a child through good and bad phases. He remains optimistic about the team’s future and continues to stand by them despite the ongoing challenges.
