“Alberta Seeks Electoral Experts Nationwide for October Referendum”

Elections Alberta is reaching out to experienced electoral staff nationwide to assist in conducting the upcoming October referendum. The call for support is common practice among electoral management bodies during crucial election events, according to Elections Alberta spokesperson Maia Hanrahan.

The specialized expertise of senior electoral staff is sought to enhance the resources of the core Elections Alberta team, particularly during the post-voting period. For instance, additional expert resources will be required from electoral management bodies to aid in the continuous 48-hour count following a 12-hour voting day.

Scheduled for October 19, the 2026 referendum in Alberta will pose 10 questions to residents, including inquiries about the province’s status within Canada and other issues related to immigration and constitutional matters.

Notably, both Elections BC and Elections Saskatchewan have received requests for assistance from Elections Alberta. Elections BC is evaluating the request against its operational requirements for the upcoming fall season. Meanwhile, Elections Canada is considering options to support Elections Alberta’s recruitment efforts, including utilizing interested employees looking for professional advancement opportunities.

Elections Saskatchewan has also pledged staff support to assist Alberta in organizing the referendum this fall. Chief Electoral Officer Michael Boda highlighted the benefits of participating in electoral events in other jurisdictions for professional development and skill enhancement.

Elections Alberta’s recruitment campaign has seen a positive response, with over 30,000 applications received from Albertans. Despite the need for external support, former Alberta Chief Electoral Officer Lorne Gibson pointed out challenges, including limited personnel from other jurisdictions and associated costs like travel and accommodation.

Gibson also mentioned the eligibility criteria for election officers in Alberta, emphasizing the importance of meeting specific requirements, such as residency, work eligibility, age restrictions, and non-partisan commitments. The concurrent byelection in Calgary-Shaw could potentially add complexity to the referendum preparations, given the additional workload and distractions it may entail.
