“Pressure Mounts for Wartime Elections in Ukraine”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy faces mounting pressure to conduct wartime elections, even though the country’s constitution prohibits such elections during martial law. Mykhailo Fedorov, the former defence minister, recently ousted from his position, is advocating for elections without specifying a timeline. He emphasizes the need for a legitimate and practical mechanism to uphold Ukraine’s democratic processes amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

While some argue that holding elections during the current war is not feasible, the political implications of the demand for change cannot be overlooked by Zelenskyy. Tymofiy Mylovanov, a former government minister, acknowledges that Fedorov’s call has sparked domestic political discussions but does not guarantee imminent elections.

Fedorov, known for his reformist approach and technological expertise, served as a vocal advocate for drone warfare against Russia before his dismissal. Despite rejecting alternative government roles, he stood firm on not accepting any position other than the defence minister role, which was ultimately filled by Yevhenii Khmara.

Questions arise regarding the practicality of holding elections amidst the ongoing conflict, with challenges such as mass displacement and military service complicating the process. Some experts view Fedorov’s election push as a strategic move without a clear plan for implementation.

Zelenskyy is yet to directly address Fedorov’s election proposal, with his advisor highlighting the pressing security threats posed by Russia. Concerns loom over the potential risks and division that wartime elections could bring, with fears of Russian interference in Ukraine’s internal affairs. Amid these debates, Russia has challenged Zelenskyy’s legitimacy, emphasizing the need for elections to determine Ukraine’s leadership.
