“Majority of Summerland, B.C., Residents Allowed to Return Home”

After enduring over a week of worry and tension, the majority of Summerland, B.C., inhabitants are now allowed to return to their residences. Mayor Doug Holmes expressed relief, calling it long-awaited news. Following the rapid growth of the Bald Range wildfire on August 7, which tragically claimed the life of an elderly woman, the community of over 12,000 had to evacuate.

At 7 a.m. PT on Tuesday, an evacuation order affecting 3,380 properties was rescinded, representing what Mayor Holmes described as the major part of Summerland. The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen mentioned in an evening briefing on Tuesday that efforts were underway to grant access to the remaining parts of Summerland in the coming days.

Graham Statt, the District of Summerland’s chief administrative officer, stated that geotechnical and power-related tasks were in progress. Statt highlighted the dedication to reopen the remaining sections of the community and lift the evacuation order by Thursday, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to achieve access to these zones.

While a smaller number of properties had their evacuation orders lifted over the weekend, relief has finally come for returning residents of Summerland. Individuals like Jan Schumacher and Cory Lee Myers expressed their emotional experiences of uncertainty and gratitude upon finding their homes unharmed and intact after the wildfire scare.

Summerland’s fire chief, Rob Robinson, acknowledged the challenging battle on Herron Road in the Cartwright area and praised the efforts that prevented the loss of the downtown core. Despite progress, 530 properties in Garnet Valley, Prairie Valley, and Meadow Valley remain under evacuation order, with the reminder that all other residents must be prepared to evacuate at short notice.

Remaining safety concerns, such as slope stability assessments and power restoration in Garnet Valley, continue to keep parts of Summerland under evacuation measures. Mayor Holmes acknowledged the community’s patience and the importance of a systematic approach to the reentry process.

As the community copes with challenges like a boil water advisory due to water treatment plant issues and a landfill fire, the collaborative efforts of firefighters have contained the fire on certain flanks while active behavior persists on the west side. The fire, spanning 220 square kilometers, remains categorized as out of control, indicating the ongoing firefighting efforts to manage its spread.
