During my travels, my schedule revolves around dining spots rather than famous landmarks or tourist spots. I derive immense pleasure from sampling new flavors, with some of my most cherished memories being the delectable dishes I’ve savored on the go. (Finding the hunger to appreciate each meal can be a challenge, but that’s where tourist attractions come in handy.)
Road trips are a gastronomic delight for enthusiasts: they allow you to cover vast distances, create your own timetable (including last-minute reservations), and, being in control behind the wheel, stop for any intriguing roadside treats (such as fresh produce stands!).
However, executing this plan requires meticulous groundwork. Through my journeys, I’ve refined my strategy for experiencing the finest foods available. To assist you in pinpointing the most delicious stops on your summer road trips, I am sharing my approach.
Thorough Research and Cross-Verification
Upon finalizing my travel destination, I adopt a comprehensive approach to food exploration. Rest assured, it’s not as daunting as it may seem and can be accomplished in as little as thirty minutes.
Firstly, I conduct an initial online search for credible articles and restaurant recommendations in the area (consult CBC, Frommer’s, Maclean’s, Condé Nast Traveler, and Eater). This initial step provides a solid foundation and offers insights into the destination’s specialties.
Subsequently, I delve into TikTok and Instagram using search terms like “best Halifax restaurants,” “best food in Halifax,” and “Halifax food.” For specific quests, such as “finest lobster in P.E.I.” or “top Jewish deli in Montreal,” customizing the search is advisable.
Lastly, I reach out personally for recommendations, whether through a quick message to a friend or a social media post. Nothing compares to a suggestion from a trusted source.
Once I compile my findings, I identify commonalities — the point where multiple individuals and unrelated sources highlight the same eatery or dish. This convergence often leads to extraordinary culinary experiences! It’s surprising how frequently this alignment occurs once you start your search. (This approach led me to the most delightful deep-fried chicken wings at Phnom Penh during my travels in Vancouver, a culinary memory I still cherish.)
Balancing Ratings Appropriately
While not an exact science, analyzing basic figures from a restaurant’s Google reviews can offer valuable insights. Yelp and Tripadvisor are also valuable resources, but Google’s extensive review database appeals to me.
As a rule of thumb, I avoid establishments with ratings below 4.1 stars. This precaution, not to undermine the potential quality of lower-rated venues, helps mitigate disappointment while traveling.
Furthermore, I consider the volume of ratings the restaurant has received:
