Simone Abrahamsohn, a Toronto resident, reflects on the challenges and joys of becoming her brother Stuart’s primary caregiver following their mother’s passing. Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires assistance with daily activities like feeding, transfers, and personal care. Despite their neurodivergent differences, Simone cherishes their bond and the companionship they share.
Growing up, Simone struggled with understanding and accepting Stuart’s neurodivergent behaviors, feeling embarrassed and disconnected from him. However, as an adult managing her own ADHD, she has learned to navigate their cohabitation more effectively. By being mindful of her own actions and respecting Stuart’s boundaries, they have found a balance that works for both of them.
Simone acknowledges the societal challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals, including the lack of support and understanding in previous decades. She aims to empower Stuart by involving him in decision-making and providing him with agency in their shared living arrangements. Despite sacrifices like giving up personal hobbies for Stuart’s care, Simone finds fulfillment in their relationship and the opportunity to be a better sibling to him now.
Embracing this second chance to support and advocate for Stuart, Simone is committed to creating a harmonious environment for both of them as middle-aged siblings. Through a combination of personal growth, outside assistance, and unconditional love, Simone is dedicated to making their living situation work for the benefit of both siblings.
