Morgan Klachefsky, a resident of Winnipeg, shared a personal story about her son’s severe allergic reaction to cashews when he was just 18 months old. The incident led to a rush to the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department, where doctors diagnosed him with a life-threatening cashew and pistachio allergy.
The experience left Klachefsky feeling overwhelmed and fearful about her son’s safety. She struggled with the idea of letting him participate in social activities like playdates or birthday parties without her constant supervision. However, as her son, Simon, grew more confident and independent, Klachefsky realized the need to address her own mental health and let go of her controlling behavior.
With time, Klachefsky learned to trust others with Simon’s care and gradually allowed him more freedom while educating him about managing his allergies. She emphasized the importance of open communication with other parents and teaching Simon how to handle his allergies responsibly, including carrying an EpiPen.
Despite initial reluctance, Klachefsky eventually agreed to let Simon attend a sleepaway camp, relying on the support of trusted friends and family members to ensure his safety. The experience was a significant step for Klachefsky in learning to let go and allow her son to explore new opportunities, even though it meant facing her fears.
As Simon continues to navigate life with his allergies, Klachefsky remains vigilant but acknowledges the importance of fostering independence and resilience in her son. Each milestone they conquer together strengthens their bond and prepares them for the challenges that lie ahead.
