The mother of a teenage boy found deceased in a ditch in Co Tyrone continues to seek answers three years after the tragic incident. Matthew McCallan, a fifteen-year-old described as “kind, caring, and witty,” was on his way to a jamboree in Fintona when he went missing after a night out with friends in December 2022.
Despite efforts involving local residents, PSNI, and the Community Rescue Service, Matthew’s body was discovered near the music festival he had attended. Frances, his mother, expressed regret that a search dog team was not deployed sooner, believing it might have made a difference in locating her son.
Recalling the night of his disappearance, Frances shared the distressing moments when she realized something was amiss. The family and community rallied together to search for Matthew, with Frances raising concerns over the PSNI’s handling of the search operation.
Frances, along with her family, raised doubts about the initial search efforts, leading to a referral to the Police Ombudsman. Despite facing challenges with legal aid for the inquest, Frances believes there were systemic shortcomings in the search process, particularly in not involving SARDA-IN.
