Conor McGregor has officially stated that he will not be participating in the upcoming UFC event at the White House.
Initially, McGregor was rumored to be the main attraction at a fight against Michael Chandler on June 14, hosted on President Donald Trump’s front lawn. However, it is now anticipated that McGregor will make his return to the octagon in July instead. UFC CEO Dana White is set to reveal the details of the White House card on Saturday, with McGregor’s absence expected, and his comeback likely scheduled for July 11.
Speaking to Smash Cast, McGregor mentioned his initial enthusiasm for the White House event, expressing his appreciation for the strong support from the administration. He highlighted the potential bout against Chandler as an exciting matchup, praising Chandler’s skills in the cage. Despite the change in plans, McGregor hinted at a possible future showdown during the International Fight Week.
McGregor also shared his intention to compete in the welterweight division for his next fight, emphasizing his increased size and readiness to take on any opponent offered to him. He expressed eagerness to return to action and mentioned his manager’s upcoming meeting in Las Vegas to negotiate a potential fight contract.
With McGregor opting out of the White House card, speculation arises that Jon Jones could headline the event in his return to the cage, possibly facing former middleweight and light-heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, who recently vacated his 205lb title.
