Keir Starmer criticized Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on countries opposing his attempt to acquire Greenland, labeling it as incorrect during a series of conversations held today, including one with the US President.
The UK Prime Minister engaged in urgent discussions with the US President following concerns raised by NATO members, including the UK, regarding the potential negative impact of Mr. Trump’s threats of tariffs on Greenland on international relations.
A statement from Downing Street highlighted the Prime Minister’s conversations with various leaders, emphasizing his stance on Greenland. The Prime Minister stressed the significance of security in the High North for all NATO allies to safeguard Euro-Atlantic interests and condemned the imposition of tariffs on allies striving for collective NATO security.
President Trump recently issued warnings of imposing tariffs on several countries, including the UK, if they opposed his plans for acquiring Greenland. He threatened to increase tariffs on NATO allies to 25% by June 1 if a deal for the purchase of Greenland was not finalized promptly.
Cabinet ministers, including Keir Starmer, strongly criticized these actions as “completely wrong.” In a joint response, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing Arctic security as a shared transatlantic interest. They expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Lisa Nandy, the UK’s Culture Secretary, emphasized the non-negotiable nature of the UK’s position on Greenland despite Trump’s threats. Nandy stressed the importance of the US-UK relationship while underlining that the future of Greenland should be determined by the people of Greenland and Denmark.
Various global leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, rejected intimidation and blackmail tactics. EU ambassadors have been summoned for emergency discussions in response to the tariff threats.
