Zipcar, a car-sharing service utilized by 650,000 drivers, has made public its decision to cease operations in the UK. The closure of its British division comes after a consultation phase that commenced in the latter part of the previous year.
Approximately 650,000 drivers across the country will be impacted by this move. The American-owned company notified its British clientele on December 1 that it planned to temporarily suspend new reservations starting from the beginning of this year.
This led to a formal consultation process with the company’s 71 employees based in the UK by the end of 2024. In a communication to customers sent on Friday, Zipcar confirmed the discontinuation of its operations in the UK.
The company’s message stated, “As per clause 7.5 of the member terms, please consider this as official notice that your account will be closed in 30 days. While new bookings with Zipcar UK are currently unavailable, your account will remain active until February 16.”
Customers were assured that they would receive a refund proportional to any unused portions of their existing memberships or subscriptions, calculated from the start of 2026.
Zipcar confirmed that the refund process would be automatic and no action would be needed from the members. Financial reports from the company indicated that its losses in 2024 had widened to £5.7 million due to a decline in customer usage.
