WhatsApp is addressing a major concern by introducing a new feature that will allow users to create unique usernames instead of relying solely on phone numbers for communication. This change comes after a long wait and aims to provide users with more privacy and convenience.
Sharing phone numbers can sometimes feel intrusive, especially when connecting with new acquaintances like classmates, neighbors, or group members. With the upcoming update, users will have the option to share usernames instead of personal phone numbers, enabling them to chat without divulging sensitive contact information.
In addition to enhancing privacy, the new feature will also improve the security of group conversations. Users participating in community chats or social groups can now engage without immediately revealing their phone numbers to strangers, ensuring a safer online interaction experience.
WhatsApp has announced that users can start reserving their preferred usernames in advance of the full rollout. Given the platform’s massive user base, securing a desired username early on will increase the chances of obtaining the desired name before it gets taken by others.
To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to the following path: Settings > Account > Username. The rollout of this feature will occur gradually over the next few months, and users will receive notifications once usernames become available in their respective regions.
