Ukrainian drones have targeted a secretive Russian super-weapon testing facility linked to Vladimir Putin. The bold preemptive strike aimed to disrupt Russia’s testing of advanced Oreshnik missiles. According to Militarnyi, Ukrainian drones attacked the 4th State Central Inter-Service Test Range Kapustin Yar in the Astrakhan Region, breaking through Russian air defenses to hit an assembly and testing building located approximately 500 miles away, near the Kazakhstan border.
This attack occurred as intelligence sources suggested that Putin might launch a devastating assault on Volodymyr Zelensky’s state within the next few days, potentially involving the deployment of the nuclear-capable Oreshnik “super-weapon” capable of speeds up to 8,000mph. One speculated objective of a potential Russian blitzkrieg on Ukraine could be a destructive campaign targeting the country’s nuclear power plant substations in an attempt to coerce surrender by disrupting electricity transmission.
Military intelligence sources have warned of Moscow’s plans to escalate intimidation tactics against European countries and the West to hinder support for Ukraine, particularly in defending against Russian air strikes on vital energy infrastructure facilities. The destruction or disabling of these substations by Russian forces aims to isolate Ukrainian nuclear power plants from the national energy grid, leading to power and heat shortages in the region.
If Putin deploys the Oreshnik weapon, it would mark the second such incident this year, following a strike on Lviv in January. The Oreshnik’s range poses a significant threat to Europe, with the potential to reach London in just eight minutes if launched from a base in Belarus. The Kapustin Yar range, the target of the recent drone strike, is a critical testing site for various missiles and defense systems, located in a remote area in the Russian semi-arid steppe.
Amidst these escalating tensions, Ukraine is facing severe challenges due to Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure, resulting in widespread disruptions. Ukrainian Territorial Defense Forces officer Oleksandr Musiienko cautioned about Russia’s preparations, highlighting the readiness of strategic bombers and the potential use of advanced missiles in the ongoing conflict. He also raised concerns about a possible new Oreshnik strike coinciding with the Davos summit to unsettle Western leaders and disrupt potential agreements benefiting Ukraine’s security and economy.
Recent Russian attacks have resulted in casualties and damage across Ukraine, with reports of civilian casualties and infrastructure destruction in various regions. The situation remains volatile as both sides prepare for potential further escalations in the conflict.
