TIFF Shifts Focus to Deal-Making Amid Industry Changes

In recent times, the Toronto International Festival has established itself as a trendsetter where movie stars kick off their Oscar campaigns. However, as prominent films and top-tier celebrities opt for other festivals for their premieres, TIFF is revamping its focus towards the business aspect of film acquisition and packaging.

With the industry going through a turbulent phase, this shift could help TIFF stay relevant. Yet, as ticket prices surge, the concern arises about the impact on the festival’s core audience: the moviegoers.

TIFF is undergoing a significant transformation by emphasizing dealmaking activities, aligning with the trend post-pandemic. Many high-profile titles such as “Primetime” with Robert Pattinson and “You Can See Everything” by Nathan Fielder chose venues like Venice and Telluride for their premieres over TIFF. To adapt, TIFF is embracing strategic sessions and deal negotiations seen in major festivals.

Backed by a $23 million boost from Ottawa, TIFF: The Market is hosting 70 sessions exploring film, television, and interactive content. Projects like a sci-fi film starring Russell Crowe and Priyanka Chopra, a rom-com with Colin Firth and Halle Berry, and a new installment of the “Air Bud” series are among those being presented.

Despite the fierce competition for red carpet premieres, TIFF faces challenges from other industry contenders. Notably, the Cannes marketplace sets the industry tone annually. For instance, Jordan Firstman’s “Club Kid” gained attention at Cannes, leading to a bidding war. The film’s Canadian premiere is scheduled at TIFF.

While TIFF aims to position itself as a fall alternative to Cannes and compete with the American Film Market in Los Angeles, it’s highlighting emerging markets in Africa and Asia. Additionally, international buyers, intrigued by new American film production incentives, might see TIFF as an attractive option.

As TIFF’s focus shifts towards dealmaking, questions arise about the impact on film fans who make the festival a vibrant experience. With rising ticket prices, fewer members of the public can afford to attend screenings, potentially altering the festival’s dynamics.

Although the number of A-listers attending TIFF may be declining, notable films of the upcoming fall season are still generating buzz in Toronto. Notable titles include “Ink” directed by Danny Boyle and “The Debut” written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg.

Moreover, TIFF’s programming includes a mix of TV series in the Primetime segment. Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” and the upcoming Crave series “Yaga” are among the featured titles.

A significant focus is placed on Canadian content at TIFF this year, catering to the success of the Canadian film industry. Projects like “The Stunt Driver,” “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple,” and “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney” offer diverse storytelling reflecting Canada’s cinematic landscape.

Additionally, films like “Smudge the Blades” showcase distinct narratives, such as the story of an Indigenous hockey team from Northern Alberta. These Canadian productions bring unique perspectives and talent to the forefront at TIFF.
