A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling for hydrogen, aiming to demonstrate its extraction from the ground on a large-scale commercial basis as an alternative to deriving it from fossil fuels. Earlier this month, Regina-based Max Power Mining initiated drilling at its third well within the Lawson Complex, located in southern Saskatchewan. The company envisions establishing the world’s first significant commercial natural hydrogen system, marking a milestone in developing a new primary energy source.
Hydrogen serves as a critical element in various industrial processes such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning to more sustainable energy sources. While hydrogen is commonly utilized for these purposes, the current predominant method of production involves energy-intensive processes that result in significant carbon emissions. Most hydrogen available for sale is classified as grey hydrogen, generated from fossil fuels without emission reduction measures, contributing to substantial carbon dioxide emissions.
In contrast, green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy through water electrolysis, offers a cleaner production method but comes with higher costs compared to grey hydrogen. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a promising solution as it can be naturally released from underground deposits with relatively lower greenhouse gas emissions. The extraction process for natural hydrogen leverages existing equipment and techniques used in natural gas and helium extraction, potentially leading to more cost-effective pricing.
Natural hydrogen is derived from underground processes such as the reaction of oxygen with iron-rich rocks or the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium, producing gamma particles that split water into hydrogen and oxygen. While natural hydrogen deposits have been discovered in various regions globally, including Canada, challenges remain in extracting these deposits effectively due to factors such as the volatile nature of hydrogen and its complex extraction requirements.
Max Power Mining’s ongoing exploration at the Lawson Complex aims to determine the location, quantity, and extractability of natural hydrogen. The company has reported positive findings from previous drilling activities, indicating significant natural hydrogen readings.
