When searching for a new home, most people prioritize features like a garden, space for kids to play, and a well-equipped kitchen. However, owning a house with an operational fish and chips shop connected to it is a rare find. In Stannington, Sheffield, a unique property with four bedrooms, off-street parking, and a food seller’s license is now on the market.
Sam Lund, 50, has decided to sell her long-time residence, where she and her late husband John ran a successful fish and chips business from their front room since 2007. The couple, originally from Lowestoft in Suffolk, quickly became a beloved part of the community, fostering friendships and a sense of belonging.
Reflecting on her experience, Sam expressed that running the chip shop not only provided a source of income but also allowed them to connect with the locals and create a strong community bond. She believes that whoever takes over the property and continues the chippy’s operation will inherit this same sense of camaraderie.
The property, listed on Purple Bricks for £300,000, includes a semi-detached house with a small restaurant, four spacious bedrooms, a private garden, and picturesque views of the Rivelin Valley. Despite the joy Sam found in serving her customers, she has made the decision to move on with her new husband Stephen after the passing of John in 2018 due to cancer.
Sam expressed her mixed emotions about parting with the business, stating, “It’s time for me to give up the batter and the oil changes and try something new. My husband Stephen and I want to live on a narrow boat, but we will miss the customers and the community around here.”
While acknowledging the challenges of running a chip shop in today’s market, with rising costs and pricing pressures, Sam emphasized that fish and chips remain a popular choice for many. She noted that witnessing customers queue up on Friday nights made all the hard work worthwhile. Although future owners may opt to repurpose the chip shop area, the property includes a food retail license.
Sam’s husband Stephen humorously remarked, “It’s like a four bed house with a large deep fat fryer in the living room. Of course it’s not literally in the living room, but it’s always an option when you’re doing the dinner.”
