A woman working as a prison officer has been sentenced to jail for engaging in a sexual act with an inmate, which was recorded on her own body-worn camera. Rebecca Pinckard, aged 46, was involved in an “intimate encounter” with Erion Nakdi, a 42-year-old serving prisoner at HMP Highpoint in Suffolk. Pinckard, a mother from Cambridgeshire, had previously sent a card to Nakdi, who is currently serving a 16-year prison term for drug-related offenses. She pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office and received a 32-week jail term.
During the trial at Cambridge Crown Court, it was revealed by prosecutor Gavin Burrell that Pinckard was caught on video engaging in a sexual act with Nakdi on July 5, 2024. The footage was discovered by another officer who was reviewing recordings from body-worn cameras as part of an investigation. Judge Anthony Cartin emphasized that Pinckard’s actions were only exposed due to an inadvertent error by an officer who found the incriminating evidence from her camera.
The judge noted that the misconduct was not an isolated incident and had been ongoing for several months, as evident from the card that Pinckard had sent to Nakdi. Pinckard was condemned for undermining public trust in the criminal justice system through her behavior.
In addition to the incident with Pinckard, Nakdi was also found to be in possession of a mobile phone in prison without authorization between July 2 and July 6, 2024. He received an additional 10-month sentence, to be served consecutively with his existing 16-year and three-month sentence for drug-related crimes.
Representatives for both parties described the relationship between Pinckard and Nakdi as an emotional connection, with Nakdi’s lawyer referring to the unauthorized phone as a “pool phone.” Pinckard’s defense lawyer characterized her actions as a momentary lapse of judgment during a challenging period in her personal life.
Despite the emotional context presented by the defense, the court emphasized the severity of the breach of professional conduct and the impact it had on the integrity of the prison system. Pinckard, visibly emotional during the sentencing, was taken into custody following the court proceedings.
